New Zealand is in the news a lot at the moment because they are an island like us and have been very successful in combating the coronavirus. The other book we’re recommending is on Sweden. This country has taken a very different approach to fighting the pandemic and schools have remained open unlike most other countries in Europe. Check the website www.getepic.com to access your two new books!

As quite a bit of work this week is about Ireland, how about learning about the author of our National Anthem and revising the lyrics of “Amhrán na bhFiann”/”The Soldier’s Song”. When do we normally sing our anthem? How does it make you feel? Some people think we should consider changing our national anthem? Why? What do you think? HISTORY OF NATIONAL ANTHEM POWERPOINT

Geography: Counties of Ireland
Girls, during this difficult time, most of us won’t have left our county, Tipperary, in many weeks and even months. Won’t it be great to visit other counties when things return to normal? Maybe we’ll travel to the sea in County Waterford or over the border to Kilkenny to see the castle. This week, we’re focusing on counties of Ireland in our Geography lesson.
TASK 1: We want you to start by reading and then reciting the poem below to your family: counties-of-ireland-poem
TASK 2: Find a map of Ireland either in an atlas or online and study its 32 counties. Find Tipperary first. Is New Inn on the map? What is the nearest town to your home that you can see on the map? Which county looks the biggest and which one is the smallest. Complete the colour by number county sheet attached below.

TASK 3: Ireland is made up of 4 provinces. Which province is Tipperary in? Which province has the most counties and probably biggest population? Fill in the table below.
TASK 4 (BONUS): The Irish for province is Cúige which means five or fifth even though Ireland has just four provinces. Can anyone tell us why this might be?
